The Movie Companion is a minimal, opinion-forward movie rating site. Unlike aggregator sites that collect thousands of reviews, we provide a single, curated perspective on films. This isn't a data-dense movie database — it's a confident, editorial voice on film.
Our rating system has been developed over 8+ years of watching and discussing movies. We believe that a simple, opinionated rating can be more valuable than a complex scoring system.
The Bucket System
We rate movies with popcorn buckets instead of traditional stars. This differentiates our site and reinforces the fun, opinionated voice we bring to film discussion. Here's what each rating means:
We'd recommend this to anyone, anytime. These are the films that define what movies can be. They leave a lasting impression, hold up over the years, and often shape the movies that come after them.
An excellent film we'd recommend without hesitation. It's just shy of the rare few that define the medium.
Solid and enjoyable. It may not be for everyone, but it delivers exactly what it promises.
Okay at best. There's an audience for this, but it's a narrow one. You'll need to really love the genre, a specific actor, or the director to get much out of it.
Not good. Even fans of the genre will probably be disappointed.
Important: 3 buckets is a good rating. It means the movie delivers what it promises. Only 1 bucket is truly bad.
User Ratings
While The Movie Companion provides the main editorial voice, logged-in users can add their own bucket ratings to any movie. User ratings contribute to a community average that's displayed alongside our rating. You can also request that we rate a movie we haven't covered yet.
